Books like giovanni's room5/27/2023 What’s the good of an American who isn’t happy? Happiness was all we had, says Hella shortly before leaving Paris for America, after the dissolution of her relationship with David. Nobody likes to travel, says Giovanni, a young Italian, to David, when David talks about Hella, his American mistress, and her time away in Spain.Īmericans should never come to Europe. Laurel/Dell paperback, 1988 Dial original, 1956ĭavid, an American in his late-twenties, imagines first that he loves Paris and later that he is sick of it, seeing it either as a playground or a tormenting mirror. Giovanni’s Room, a book featuring a man who has chosen not to be free, might be considered James Baldwin’s declaration of independence: the book refuses to accept the usual boundaries of nationality, ethnicity, gender, or sexuality, turning these into open questions, in the belief that the only way to live is to be open to experience, to respect one’s own feelings and perceptions, and to form standards and goals founded on one’s experience and knowledge.

Neverwhere illustrated edition5/27/2023 (NOTE: This review will discuss elements of the story itself, Riddell’s illustrations, and Gaiman’s audiobook. Now, having finished the book, I can honestly say that I’m really mad at myself for how long it took me to read this book because it’s really that damn good. With this new copy of the book and a copy of the audiobook – narrated by Gaiman, himself – it was time to finally read Neverwhere. I went to my local bookstore and found a new version of the book – Gaiman’s preferred text, now illustrated by Chris Riddell, one of Gaiman’s frequent collaborators. Enough time has passed that I don’t really remember a whole lot of the TV show, so it was really the perfect time to give the book I read. Now, in the wake of the success of Gaiman’s adaptation of his and Terry Pratchett’s Good Omens, I thought I’d return to a few favorites of Gaiman’s work while finally giving Neverwhere a real chance. Years passed and I’d read a number of Gaiman’s other novels – Stardust, American Gods, Anansi Boys, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and more – while never returning to his first to really give it a fair shot. I tried to read Neverwhere, the first solo novel from Neil Gaiman, years ago but I had shortly beforehand watched the original TV version of the story, so I had a lot of trouble getting into the novel as it skewed so closely to what I’d so recently watched. Fallon colleen hoover5/27/2023 I could sense the chemistry between them, and their emotions were quite dramatic, sort of like in a When Harry Met Sally kind of way. It is told in the perspectives of Fallon and Ben, which seems to be standard in a Colleen Hoover novel. This is ultimately because each new chapter is a different year, and the characters have grown, with new plot twists arising. The plot is gripping and progresses at a speed that allows for a lot of action to take place. I finished it quickly and loved reading the story. The best part about this story is that it is a page-turner. You can’t just walk away from it and expect it to linger until you’re ready for it.’ You grab it with both hands and you do everything in your power not to let it go. As each November 9 comes and goes, the two have doubts about the other and struggle over their true feelings. While trying to become an actress, Fallon is still suffering greatly over an accident she was in two years ago. Ben is an aspiring novelist, who uses their story as an inspiration for his book. November 9 by Colleen Hoover follows Fallon and Ben, who make a pact to each other to meet on November 9 for the next five years. Ruth can't say what's wrong, but she thinks something is wrong, so she wants her inquisitive friend Jane to check it out.īased on nothing more than that, Miss Marple is off. Ruth tells Jane that she is worried about her sister Carrie Louise, Miss Marple's other school friend. Miss Jane Marple meets up with her old school friend, Ruth Van Rydock. They Do It With Mirrors is a 1952 mystery novel by Agatha Christie. The novel charts the intellectual, moral, and sexual development of Stephen Dedalus, from his childhood listening to his father's stories through his schooldays and adolescence to the brink of adulthood and independence, and his awakening as an artist. Its originality shocked contemporary readers on its publication in 1916 who found its treating of the minutiae of daily life indecorous, and its central character unappealing. So begins one of the most significant literary works of the twentieth century, and one of the most innovative. The obstacle is the way by ryan holiday5/27/2023 In other words, the obstacle becomes the way. It’s the timeless idea of how military obstacles can be turned into advantages-and how advantages can so quickly be turned against someone. The visual interpretation is loosely inspired by the stories in my book The Obstacle Is The Way about Grant’s siege at Vicksburg and Eisenhower’s turnaround at Normandy. To see each obstacle as an opportunity to practice some virtue: patience, courage, humility, resourcefulness, justice, and creativity. Making certain that what impedes us can empower us. So that setbacks or problems are always expected and never permanent. To act with “a reverse clause,” so there is always a way out or another route to get to where you need to go. What does this phrase mean? Well, in Marcus’s words is the secret to an art known as turning obstacles upside down. As Marcus Aurelius put it nearly 2000 years ago: “The impediment to action advances action. In this way, “The Obstacle Is the Way” limited edition print I’m producing is a reminder of the timeless wisdom that you can turn every obstacle into an opportunity, every trial into a triumph. The form doesn’t matter-it can be a coin that reminds you of your mortality that you carry with you, it can be a quote taped on your screen, it can be a bust on your desk, or it can be a print above your working space. So you cannot run away from it, so you see it enough times that it becomes imprinted in your mind. I am a big proponent of turning good advice and wisdom into a tangible physical object. Book the awakening by kate chopin5/26/2023 It’s easy to imagine how shocking Edna Pontellier’s actions were, especially leaving her husband and children to live on her own. I find it interesting to take this perspective into consideration when reading and analyzing The Awakening. Sadly, Chopin was deeply disappointed by the public’s reaction to what is now considered a masterpiece of the 19th century and wrote little after ‘The Awakening.’ This depiction of infidelity is one that the literary world was not ready to accept when the novel was published. Famously, after it was published, the public (particularly the literary community) reacted poorly to its content and intentions.ġ9th Century and 21st Century PerspectivesĬhopin spends much of the novel following her protagonist’s attempts to find happiness, including affairs with other men while still married to her husband. Published in 1899, ‘The Awakening’ is one of only two books that Kate Chopin published during her lifetime. The clan of the cave bear author5/26/2023 The Clan of the Cave Bear is one of those stories that I’ve returned to over and over again. I’ll be the first to shout it from the rooftops if that ever changes! In the meantime, why not talk about something I enjoyed quite a bit? No, it doesn’t look like there’s anything in the works. Part of the reason why I picked this specific tale to start this series off with is because I’ve been getting a spike of visitors coming to this site looking for information about Auel, her characters, and whether there is going to be a TV show or movie made about the Earth’s Children books. It has four sequels about Ayla’s life as an adult. Auel in 1980 about an orphaned human girl named Ayla who was raised by Neanderthals. The Clan of the Cave Bear is a prehistoric novel written by Jean M. Once I’ve come up with several similar titles to recommend to people who enjoyed a certain book, that post will be added to the queue. Just like with the interviews with people who love speculative fiction that I’ll begin publishing here next week, Hopeful Science Fiction, film reviews, Questions from the Search Engines, and Blogging Advice, this series won’t be updated on a specific schedule. I’ve decided to start another series on this blog. |
